Caroline Schulte Frost
Caroline was born on March 1, 1904 and grew up in Plainview, Nebraska. Her parents, Elizabeth Sturbaum Schulte and Joseph
Schulte were both born in Germany and met and married in Nebraska. A Catholic family, they had seven children: Emil, Anne,
Ed, Caroline, Alice, Joe, and Collette. The family farmed crops and were relatively well-to-do farmers. Carrie spoke very
happily of her childhood, but from Collette's recollections, Mom suspects that there was strife, and perhaps Joe secretly
had trouble with alcohol. Elizabeth told her children not to name any children after her because she didn't have a happy
life.
As a child, Carrie was sent to Sacred Heart school in Olean, about 20 miles from Plainview. It was to this school that
Uncle Emil took us in the 1980 trip across the country and Mom took the school ledger which had Carrie's name in it, along
with Emil, Anne, and Alice's. At Sacred Heart Carrie learned German and music and art, which left a very important
impression on her life, and to which she later referred many times. She played the piano and later wanted all of her own
children to have music, and all of the girls took lessons. Mom recalls that she couldn't walk by a piano without playing,
and she knew six or eight songs that she played often.
Carrie left high school early and went to a normal school (a teacher training school). She taught nearby in Nebraska for
two years. One Saturday night at a community dance Caroline met Arthur Karl Frost and soon after they were married when
Carrie was age 18.
