Lead, South Dakota

In 1930 or '31 the Frost family moved to South Dakota. Two or three of Karl's brothers had already moved there for mine jobs. They stayed with one of the brothers until they found a house and Karl got a job with the Homestake Mining Company. Expecting their fifth child, Karl and Carrie found a home in nearby Nevada Gulch. The time for Helen's birth arrived in the spring of 1933 amidst a severe flood. The doctor came through the flooded gulch on horseback and had difficulty crossing the water. Karl tried to help but was swept away in the water and nearly died. Soon after, the family had moved into town and briefly lived in a house on Chicago Avenue until they could buy a house on Ridge Road. Both Carrie and Karl had siblings in town and there was a lot of family activity and many gatherings. In August, 1934 they expected the arrival of their sixth child.
