Estelle Legg
Daughter of Clifford Legg and Mary Rice, Estelle grew up in Melrose on High Street with her siblings Robert, Mary, Pat,
Alice, and Florence. Clifford had immigrated from Ireland via Nova Scotia. Mom remembers that he used to say they were the
real Yankees. From Prince Edward Island Clifford moved to Rutland, Vermont for a short time and then moved to Boston.
Clifford Legg was a plumber and he helped to get the plumbers' union into the Boston area. Mom recalls that "he did quite
well and was a short, funny, little gnome type man. He was still alive for the first ten years that Dad and I were married."
He died at age 89. According to Mom, Mary Legg was "a very pretty woman and always dressed in white gloves and a hat every
time she left her house. She was very much the lady and prissy. She always looked like she had'stepped out of a hat box',
an expression used at that time and that often applied to her. Her daughters, Mary, Florence, Alice, Estelle, and Pat were
too, to some extent earlier on, Florence especially. "Florence was an accomplished ice skater and seamstress.
