Abraham Temple History

Born c. 1597, unknown location in England, unknown parents.

Married to Abigail, unknown date and location (probably England).

Abigail & Abraham had at least six children:
Name Date of Birth Birth Place
Anne Temple  christened June 25, 1620  Sidestrand, Norfolk, England
Richard  christened April 6, 1623  Sidestrand, Norfolk, England
Thomas Temple  christened September 18, 1625  Sidestrand, Norfolk, England
Tobias Temple  c. 1628  England
Abraham Temple  christened May 26, 1633  Sidestrand, Norfolk, England
Robert Temple  c. 1639  Salem, MA

There is some confusion as to the name of the wife of Abraham Temple. Some speculate that he was married twice, both times in England. Some suggest Abigail was his first wife and mother of his children. I cannot locate any documentation to support this.

Abraham was living in Salem MA as early as 1636 according to various records. He probably originally received a land grant of five acres as a record from November 21, 1638 indicates five acres were granted to him “to make a ten acre lot”. Some sources state that he was a tailor. This theory could be supported by the small size of his land grant, too small for a true working farm, and that one of his grandsons was also a tailor. Skills tended to be passed down the family line.

It is believed that Abraham died sometime after 1639 as that is the last time he appears in any records. He is buried in Old Hill Burying Ground, Concord, MA. There are three men named Abraham Temple buried there. The other two are his grandson and a great grandson. There is a grave for an Abigail Temple with no dates.

Tobais Temple was alive in Salem, MA, in 1659.

Robert Temple was living in Salem, MA, in 1660. Died Saco, Maine, 1675, killed by Indians. He had a son Richard Temple who settled in Reading, MA.
